Equine Journal Writer's Guidelines
Editorial Mission: The Equine Journal is a monthly, all-breed/discipline regional publication for horse enthusiasts. The purpose of our editorial is to educate, entertain and enable amateurs and professionals alike to stay on top of new developments in the field. Every month, the Equine Journal presents feature articles and columns spanning the length and breadth of horse-related activities and interests from all corners of the country.
Submissions: The Equine Journal welcomes freelance submissions and queries from freelance writers. We recommend that you read several current issues of our publication before sending us a query or manuscript. To request a sample issue, send $6 to: Equine Journal, 103 Roxbury Street, Keene, NH 03431. An editorial calendar is available on our website, www.equinejournal.com, or by written request. It is always a good idea to query us first and send clips of previous work. Allow at least eight weeks for reply or return of manuscripts.
We do not accept poetry, fiction, or stories told from a first-person perspective.
We prefer to receive queries and manuscripts by email or U.S. mail. Please include recent clips of your published work with any submission or query. Send submissions and queries to:

Rights, deadlines, payment: We buy first North American serial rights and make payment during the month following acceptance. Our normal editorial deadline for feature articles and columns is four to five months prior to publication.
Feature Articles: Payment varies based on the length and complexity of the article, but ranges between $150 and $175. Most of our features are 1,800-2,000 words.
Horse Health: If you wish to send a submission to our Horse Health column, follow the guidelines presented above. Submissions should not be longer than 1,500 words. Accepted material pays $75-$125.
The Last Laugh: If you wish to send a submission for our Last Laugh department, follow the guidelines presented above. Submissions should not be longer than 750 words. Payment varies between $25-$75 depending on length and quality.
Spotlight Articles: These business profiles are solely the result of assignment by the editor; unsolicited submissions are not accepted.
