Wind Gate Performance Quarter Horses of East Aurora, New York, is a Quarter Horse breeding facility offering some of the finest western pleasure and hunt seat Quarter Horses and appendix Quarter Horses in the nation. Owned and operated by Garnet Stevenson, her husband, and their three daughters, the farm is home to AQHA Superior Western Pleasure Quarter Horse stallion, The Ebony Jet – a solid black grandson of the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion, Hotrodders Jet Set – and The Ebony Jet’s own son, The Empire Jet. Carefully bred for superior conformation, movement, and temperament, Wind Gate Performance Quarter Horses carry some of the finest bloodlines available in the country.
The Ebony Jet (1991) is a 15.2-hand, solid black stallion sired by Superior Quarter Horse stallion, The Burgundy Jet (owned by Garnet), out of the AQHA mare, Dar-C-Bars. Jet was Top Ten in the Nation, and High Point in the Nation in Junior Western Pleasure and Open Western Pleasure. At three years of age, he became the youngest superior western pleasure stallion on Stallion Avenue at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. Winner of the QuarterRama out of 47 horses in the Junior Western Pleasure, he also won the Canadian Snaffle Bit Association award (out of 63 horses). He was a finalist at the Quarter Horse Congress in western pleasure and a top finalist at the AQHA World Show.
The Ebony Jet has consistently produced all around get that are always in the blue ribbons and the futurity money. He has produced AQHA high point winners, AQHA ROM award winners, AQHA futurity winners, and champions in Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, and Hunter Over Fences, in addition to show champions at HITS in Ocala, Florida.
“He has perfect conformation,” explains Garnet, a 25-year veteran breeder of Quarter Horses. “He is a natural loper and a great jogger, with a deep hock and natural level headset. He has that great refined, modern pleasure look and movement and is not coarse looking. The thing I love best about him is that baby doll head and those tiny ears. He’s really a kind, quiet guy and is very easy to handle and work around. He’s a natural breeder and passes all of those attributes on to his offspring.”
AQHA appendix Quarter Horse stallion, The Empire Jet (2001) is the son of The Ebony Jet, a great grandson of Hotrodders Jet Set, and is out of a stakes winning Thoroughbred mare. The AQHA Junior High Point winner in Working Hunter over Fences, he qualified for the World Show in Green Working Hunter, Junior Working Hunter and Junior Hunter Hack. He was also reserve champion at HITS/Ocala in the greens and baby greens.
“This big, beautiful, exotic looking hunter stallion has correct conformation with good bone,” Garnet continues. “He has the same deep hock as The Ebony Jet, with good sized feet and clean legs. He stands 16.2 hands, has a long neck, and is solid black like his dad. He is homozygous for black gene, meaning he will always produce a black, bay or brown foal. He produces those tall, sweepy movers with long necks, flat knees, a huge eye. And a great big, sweet temperament, with a willing personality, too. He is also a proven color producer of Paints.”
Garnet and her three daughters manage all of the breeding, foaling, handling, and ground training of the young stock on the farm. Once the horses reach two years of age, they are broken out to ride and offered for sale as show prospects.
“We try to sell trained horses to family show homes with kids. Everyone can show these horses. All of my daughters have worked and shown what we’ve raised and bred. Family showing is getting harder to do these days, and we really want to encourage that. Once in a while, under very special situations, I will sell a weanling foal if I know the circumstances of where it is going, but for the most part, we wait until the horses are trained and broken out before selling them. I also like to keep track of the foals as they go along in their careers. I love getting the news reports and seeing the winning pictures!”
The farm has a wonderful selection of horses for sale to the right homes. Don’t Pass My Hotrod is a four-year-old red roan gelding out of a The Ebony Jet x Barpasser mare showing in western pleasure. The Elegant Empire by The Empire Jet is a knockout pretty black yearling hunt seat filly. Jet Setten ona Breeze is a dark brown yearling appendix Quarter Horse hunt seat filly. Both are in training for lunge line. The farm also has a few finished all around show horses suitable for youth or amateurs, as well as other young show prospects for sale, including two black and one bay weanling hunt seat fillies by The Empire Jet, and one black weanling western pleasure filly by The Ebony Jet.
Both stallions have a 100 percent conception rate and are available by artificial insemination. The facility has its own laboratory on the premises where they collect and ship fresh cooled semen daily, starting February 15 through June 30. Both stallions are enrolled into the AQHA Incentive Fund.
These fine stallions and their offspring may be seen at Wind Gate Performance Quarter Horse’s websites, www.theebonyjet.com or www.theempirejet.com. Please call 716-652-8174 or email inquiries to Garnet Stevenson at theebonyjet@aol.com.
